The White Ribbon Campaign
Susan B. Anthony strives to create safety, healing and growth for the clients throughout the northwest corner of Connecticut. In an effort to promote awareness, we are introducing the White Ribbon Campaign. The White Ribbon Campaign in the largest effort in the world organized by men devoted to ending violence against women. The history of the White Ribbon Campaign stems from the Montreal Massacre where on December 6, 1989 14 women were shot and murdered by a fellow student at the University of Montreal because they were feminists. As a result of this horrendous act a small group of men came together in 1991 and decided that as men they had a responsibility to educate and urge other men to speak out against violence against women and the white ribbon campaign began. The White Ribbon Campaign has grown to include chapters in 25 countries currently.
The goal of the campaign is to encourage self-reflection amongst men, to forge alliances between men and women, and to call on governments and institutions to seriously address the question of violence against women. Violence against women includes physical assault, sexual assault, psychological abuse, and emotional abuse. These abusive acts contribute to the real suffering of women in society today.
Today Susan B. Anthony wants to include the White Ribbon Campaign in its outreach throughout Northwestern Connecticut by asking men in the community to take a personal pledge to never commit, condone, or remain silent about men's violence against women.
View the men and boys who have taken the pledge.
In order to create change men must first become aware that they play an integral part in the problem. We know that all men are not violent. In our society boys are socialized to be strong and show no emotion. Acceptable behavior for boys included violence and aggression. "Big boys don't cry" is a common theme taught to boys from the time they are very young. Boys showing their emotions are seen as "feminine", so boys grow up into men believing that to be a man is to be powerful and in control. With this in mind it becomes clear how violence against women has become such a huge problem in our society. How can you make a difference?
- Take a stand in your community, family, school, or workplace
- Don’t be a silent bystander to sexual harassment
- Acknowledge that violence against women is every man’s business
- Call 911 if you see violence being perpetrated
- Wear a white ribbon
- Talk to the women in your life about the problem
- Educate a boy about what it really means to be a man
Please join us in our work to end violence against women for without your help no change can be affected. If you or someone you know is interested in making this pledge, please click on the link below to sign our online form.
