 What is Sexual Assault?

  • Sexual assault is sexual contact forced upon a person without consent.
  • Sexual assaults are crimes which include rape, attempted rape, unwanted sexual touching , child sexual abuse and incest, as well as voyeurism, exhibitionism, obscene phone calls, and exposing children to pornography or sexual acts.
  • In crimes of sexual assault, sex is used as the weapon. Rape is an act of power, control and domination.
  • No one, regardless of dress or behavior, deserves to be sexually assaulted.
  • No one is immune from the possibility of sexual assault. Sexual assault victims have been as young as a few weeks old and as old as 95.
  • Men as well as women can be sexually assaulted.

 Facts about Sexual Assault:

  • 1/4 girls are sexually assaulted by the time they are 18.
  • 1/6 boys are sexually assaulted by the time they are 18.
  • 78 women over the age of 18 are raped in the United States every hour, 683,000 every year.
  • Approximately 80% of victims are assaulted by someone they know, not a stranger.
  • Over 80% of victims never go to the police.

  • Information about what to do following a rape, sexual assault, or some type of sexual abuse
  • Support at the hospital during a sexual assault exam
  • Advocacy and support if you report the assault to the police
  • Advocacy and support if the case goes to court
  • Help with restraining orders and application for victim's compensation
  • Emergency shelter for victims at risk
  • One-on-one support counseling, in person and by phone; day and evening appointments available
  • Support groups for survivors of rape, child sexual assault and other types of sexual assault
  • Referrals to other services as necessary
